Good Food Initiatives
The Ottawa Good Food Box is a proud member of the Good Food Initiatives; a collaborative of food security programs working in partnership across Ottawa, comprised of the MarketMobile, Good Food Markets and the Ottawa Good Food Box. All three initiatives focus on increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and are open to everyone. Together in 2106, with 15,439 customer purchases, we sold almost $170,000 of affordable produce and dried goods. These purchases fed individuals, couples and families, for a broader impact on food security and health. Volunteers are a valuable part of the three organizations, and contributed 12,340 hours to the Good Food Initiatives in 2016.
A grocery on wheels, MarketMobile brings healthy, affordable, and culturally appropriate foods to food insecure Ottawa neighbourhoods.
Good Food Markets
Good Food Markets are community-run markets that sell healthy foods at great value. These markets bring fresh vegetables and fruit as well as dried goods to neighbourhoods where it might not otherwise be available and where farmers’ markets are not viable.
Aging in Place
The Good Food Box is pleased to be working with the Aging in Place program to bring fresh produce to seniors’ communities. Food Chop programs and Community Kitchens (supplied in part by fresh fruit and vegetable delivery every month by the Good Food Box) are up and running in eleven Ottawa Community Housing senior apartment buildings.
Transforming the Food System in West Carleton project
We are working in partnership to increase rural access to fresh fruits and vegetables by expanding and strengthening the Good Food Box program in this food insecure region as part of a Community Foundation of Ottawa grant.
